In the south of Spain, holidays in Costa del Sol are about sunny beaches and picturesque coastal towns. It's known for the popular towns of Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Fuengirola, beautiful Blue Flag beaches and the stunning capital city Malaga. Lively marinas, lots of watersports, great food and karaoke bars await you on holidays to Costa del Sol. Its mild winter makes it the sunniest region in Europe - so head here for summer sun or a well earned winter sun holiday.
Family friendly activities in Costa del Sol
The beaches of Costa del Sol are great for water-skiing, snorkelling and other watersports. If you're into nature, take the kids to Bioparc Fuengirola, considered among one of the best zoos in the world, complete with a lemur island. The Sea Life Aquarium in Benalmadena has sharks, dolphins and sea otters and when everyone's itching to actually get in the water, head to Aqualand in Torremolinos or Aquavelis Waterpark in Velez-Malaga. After wearing yourselves out, slow down and take in the views on the Benalmádena Cable Car which has a great panoramic view of the coastline.
If you're visiting Costa del Sol, try to visit Malaga, the birthplace of Picasso, which is renowned for its picturesque streets, gardens and a palace fortress. If you're into lively vibes, head to La Malagueta but if you crave a quiet spot, try El Palo. If you want to shop, hit Calle Larios street, where you can find high-end boutiques. As for evening activities, the marina has plenty of bars and restaurants, which are open until the early hours of the morning - be sure to sip on some sweet wine at El Pimpi, a bar that's famous for its courtyard and terrace overlooking the Roman amphitheatre.
Day trip to Gibraltar & Morocco
Drive down from Malaga to the southern end of Spain and take a ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar to reach Morocco. Take in the unique architecture, browse colourful spice markets, pick up souvenirs at the souks, all in a day. You can also drive across the border to Gibraltar, where you can visit the incredible Rock of Gibraltar and see its resident monkeys, explore the walled city and get a taste of home with its UK high street shops.
Costa del Sol nightlife
Whether you want outlets, markets or souvenirs, the Costa del Sol has shops for every budget and taste. Pick up leather goods in Fuengirola, bargain jewellery at Torremolinos' Calle San Miguel street and souvenirs at Marbella's Old Town. Shopping centres abound in La Cañada in Marbella and Rosaleda Center in Malaga. Shops stay open late in most of the resorts, so you can do some window shopping as you walk to dinner. If you're interested in jewellery and really want to splash the cash, check out the boutiques in Puerto Banus that run along the swanky marina with its superyachts and Ferraris. When you're ready to swap the bags for the bars, explore Puerto Banus or Marbella, which has no shortage of nightclubs.
