If you fancy a fun-filled city break with plenty of culture, sightseeing, amazing cuisine and upbeat nightlife, Amsterdam holidays are just for you. One of the most popular short haul destinations in Europe, this Dutch delight exudes warmth in its bright tulip fields, windmill-dotted sunny lands, charming historical centre, buzzing canal culture and cutting-edge art scene. Stroll along the charming and leafy Vondelpark – a favourite among families and couples – or visit the city’s legendary museums and galleries, including Anne Frank's House and the Rijksmuseum. De Wallen, Amsterdam’s Red Light district, is a one-of-a-kind experience and one of the most sought-after areas for stag- and hen-dos. But it’s not just the sights that attract holidaymakers to Amsterdam – make sure to indulge in Dutch delicacies like Stroopwafel (caramel waffles), or shop at markets such as Albert Cuypmarkt or Noordermrkt. If you’re looking for a sunny city break, holidays in Amsterdam are a firm favourite for its eclectic mix of beauty, culture and fun!

Explore the iconic Amsterdam canals

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and a marvellous backdrop to the city's historical centre, the canals form an important part of Amsterdam. The historic canals are canopied by shady elm trees, neat cobbled pathways and fairy-tale bridges, all of which create a picture-postcard imagery. Stroll on the winding walkways, bike along the sunny canal banks, cruise on a small canal boat or just sit idly by a café sipping coffee. Canal cruises are the most scenic way to take in the sights of the city and you can jump on board all around the centre of Amsterdam.

Nightlife in De Wallen

The vibrant nightlife of Amsterdam is considered one of Europe’s best. AIR, Trouw and Studio 80 are among the city’s most happening clubs for a fabulous night on the tiles. The Red Light district in De Wallen is known for its racy atmosphere and is but the party districts of Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein are equally buzzing. If you are a theatre enthusiast, you'll find good shows on the Nes street. Albert Cuypmarket, a large open-air market sells everything from street food to handmade jewellery and souvenirs. During the summer simply walk along the central canals and you'll discover loads of waterfront bars and chilled restaurants to enjoy at your leisure.

Tour Amsterdam's Flower Market

Get ready for a kaleidoscopic of vibrant colours when you visit the Bloemenmarkt, the flower market of Amsterdam. Tulips of all hues – red, yellow, white and pink – fill the market and are sold as both bouquets and bulbs. The backdrop for the perfect Instagram selfie, this market is a one-stop shop for all kinds of plants, seeds and garden paraphernalia. There are also shops where you can pick up souvenirs like miniature windmills and fridge magnets.

Day trips from Amsterdam

If you wish to explore more of the beauty of the Netherlands, head out of Amsterdam to explore the scenic countryside, tulip fields, windmills, castles and historic towns. A short train ride from the city lies Haarlem – a town rich in history and culture, and chock-full of shops, cafés and restaurants. You can also go on guided cycle trips of the nearby towns. The famous tulip fields and windmills of Lisse are must-dos on any traveller’s bucket list. Thanks to the city’s reliable transport system, Utrecht, Gouda or Rotterdam are great options for a great day trip. If you’re fond of the sea, head to Zandvoort aan Zee and Bloemendaal aan Zee. Windy during winter but a popular summer hangout, the golden beaches are well connected by public transport.
