If you’re looking for sun, sand and sea with a touch of city life, then holidays in Porto were tailor-made for you. In addition to the fabulous city centre, the historic city of Porto has beautiful riverbanks with port cellars, vibrant bars, a lively dining scene and a wealth of activities along its coastline. Porto holidays aren't complete without a visit the UNESCO-listed Ribeira district and its charming cobblestone lanes, where you can taste authentic Portuguese cuisine. Venture south across the Dom Luis bridge to the port wine caves for a tour, or visit the beautiful beaches of Matosinhas and relax on the golden sand as waves break along the shore. Though popular, Porto is less crowded than other European hotspots, so you can explore it without having to fight through bustling crowds.

Explore the Douro River

Start your morning on the Douro River at the foot of the city’s defining Dom Luís Bridge. Stroll around the riverside and soak up the vibe of Ribeira Square – the stunning, UNESCO-listed, medieval side of town. Day trippers can be picked up from their hotel for a guided tour across the scenic Douro valley, including its main towns – Lamego, Régua and Pinhão – where you’ll have the opportunity to explore the towns, museums and port caves.

Bronze at the beach

It doesn’t take too long to reach the beach in Porto. Add some fun to it and hire a bike from the city centre and cycle along the Douro River, where you’ll come across the sweeping Atlantic coast and golden sandy beaches. Stroll around the coast and take your pick from the chic cafes dotting the beach of Matosinhas. Or travel to the seaside town of Miramar, popular for its charming chapel, wooden walkways and seaside bars.

Shopping in Porto

For those who love shopping, Porto has many shopping options, from the multi-storey shopper’s paradise El Corte Ingles to A Vida Portuguesa that offers retro souvenirs. Portosigns is famous for traditional souvenir shopping, while La Maison des Porto boasts over 200 bottles of Port that you can sample before you buy.

Dine out in Porto

Whether you fancy a cocktail by the river, or a traditional dinner in the square, Porto has plenty to offer when the sun goes down. Dining at Wine Quay Bar overlooking the Douro River is the perfect way to spend a romantic evening, or head to the fantastic Comme Ça for its exotic decor and authentic Portuguese food that won’t break the bank. Bombarda is popular for its hipster bars and traditional eateries. You can party with the locals at Candelabra, a cool bar serving local and international cocktails. The bars around the Ribeira district are also great for socialising.
