If you hire a car, it’s even possible to explore parts of The South West Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, which runs down the western coast of Portugal. Getting Around
Like many Portuguese resorts, Alvor, Algarve is very walkable. However, many choose to rent a car to explore more of the local area and further afield. There are also plenty of taxi firms available for taking you from A to B.
Hit The Water
There’s no doubt that holidays to Alvor mostly centre around the beach. But that doesn’t have to be restricted to sunbathing; in fact, various companies around Alvor offer up boat trips around the coastline, towards Lagos’ secret caves and up the river to historic Silves. There’s even the possibility of spotting dolphins while you’re out at sea! Take your pick from a variety of boats and tour lengths; there’s everything from speed boats to classic Portuguese sailing cargo vessels that have been modified to suit tourists. One of the most popular tours is a sunset boat trip that takes in views of Alvor after twilight; and which is best enjoyed with a glass of Champagne in hand!
Meet Wildlife At Ria De Alvor
For a taste of Portuguese wildlife, don’t miss a trip to Ria de Alvor Nature Reserve. Whether you’re a walking enthusiast, a bird watcher or an animal lover, the Alvor Estuary provides a year-round spot for peaceful exploration - and is also the residence of many flamingos. The wooden boardwalk allows you to explore parts of the 1454 hectares without trampling on the wildlife, and it also makes it accessible for all! If you’re lucky enough to visit during spring or autumn, keep your eyes peeled for migrating birds - and during summer, see if you can spot any sea daffodil flowers sprouting up from the desert floor.
Go Skydiving
Skydiving is something that’s at the top of many daredevils’ bucket lists - and if you’re going to do it, you might as well do it right! Skydive Algarve will pick you up from your accommodation in Alvor and take you on a tandem skydive from 10 or 15,000ft. After some comprehensive instruction you’ll leap from the plane with your instructor, ready to enjoy 360-degree views out over the Algarve before your parachute brings you safely to the ground. Get a bird’s-eye-view of the area you’re staying in, including the soft arch of Beach Três Irmãos and the Ria Alvor nature reserve.
Historic Castle Of Alvor
Love a spot of history? Alvor, and its surrounding area, has got that in spades, too. The medieval Castle of Alvor was originally built in 7th century B.C., destroyed in 1189 AD, and then rebuilt in 1300. All was going well until the 1755 Lisbon earthquake which shook the castle to its current remains. Today, you can still see parts of the castle’s ruins, while kids can enjoy the playground that’s been built into the interior of the main square. For even more history, check out nearby Lagos which features an Old Town that’s still partially contained within its ancient 16th century walls.
