Heraklion, (pronounced hi-rak-lee-on) sits on Crete's beautiful north coast and boasts two of the Greek Islands' main resorts, among rugged bays and quaint deserted islands. Holidays in Heraklion have plenty to offer in terms of golden beaches, rich history, restaurants and entertainment, too.
Head into lively Hersonissos and party central Malia where music plays well into the next morning, while those who prefer peace and quiet can escape to nearby Gouves and Dia. If you wish to explore the history of the region a little further, head 145 km west to Chania, a town built on Minoan ruins which has a nice harbour and a charming old town to discover on foot. Head to Aquapark with the family where you can splash about in the water or explore Amazonas Park in nearby Aghios Nikolaos, there's something for everyone in Heraklion.
You'll find nice tavernas around the main Eleftherias Square, where you can sample a delicious meze platter coupled with some raki and tsikoudia. Adventure lovers can participate in watersports and hiking and cycling tours while those who want to explore the resort's culture can head to Heraklion old town or potter around The Palace of Knossos. If you still have time, explore pretty resorts like Stalis or Koutouloufari filled with little cottages and lush olive groves and step off the tourist trail. Whether you're interested in the ancient ruins or bustling beaches, Heraklion holidays have it all.
