Aside from breath-taking beaches, holidays to Greece are also known for ancient historical ruins. Be it the towering temple of Athena or the crumbling ruins of Parthenon, the classical architecture you’ll see during your Greece holidays is something to behold.

Getting Around
Private or public transfer from Greece’s main airports is generally easy. On the islands many tourists opt to hire a car at the airport to give them the freedom to explore. Scooter hire is also a popular option in the main resorts. If you plan to island hop, you can use the inter-island ferry service. In Athens and other cities, buses are the main mode of public transport and taxis are widely available.
Corfu
With so many options, finding the island right for you is not hard. Corfu is a favourite with people of all ages and for good reason.
Historic Corfu Town is a lovely place to spend a day. Visit the magnificent Old Fortress then explore the squares and cobbled streets lined with Venetian mansions, museums, speciality shops and cafes.
If your idea of holiday heaven is spending the day sunbathing on an uncrowded beach before having a delicious dinner under the stars in a traditional taverna, Corfu is full of resorts where the vibe is laidback and there’s not a foam party in sight! Try Agios Georgios or Acharavi for a peaceful and picturesque place to recharge your batteries.
Thanks to its winter rainfall Corfu is greener than many Mediterranean islands and its lush hillsides and gorges are home to abundant wildlife. Saddle up for a day trekking on horseback, head off on two wheels on one of the island’s cycle routes or hike one of the scenic walking trails.
Crete
The largest Greece island is a family favourite thanks to its many attractions and countless beaches.
Agios Nikolaos, in the north-eastern area of Lassithi, is one of Crete’s most popular resorts thanks to its great choice of safe, Blue Flag beaches. The north is also home to the Heraklion region, which boasts amazing beaches in resorts like Stalis and Hersonissos. In the west, Rethymnon and Chania have the best sandy stretches.
The capital of Crete, Heraklion, traces its beginnings back to the 9th century so it has plenty to please history buffs, including the old city walls, Koules Fortress and the stunning Venetian Palace. But it’s a bustling modern city too with plenty of great shops and restaurants.
Crete’s two waterparks have enough thrills and spills to keep adrenalin addicts happy all day long. Aquaplus near Hersonissos boasts black holes, an aqua slalom and a crazy river. Watercity in Anopolis has 36 pools and slides. Seaside thrill seekers are also well catered for with a great choice of scuba diving and watersports.
Luxurious Islands
Greece is not just about family-friendly low-cost resorts. There is plenty of luxury to explore and indulge in too.
Santorini sees some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world. Head to the stunning town of Oia for the best views. As the rays bathe the town’s iconic whitewashed buildings in a molten orange glow, make sure you have your camera ready for some Instagram-worthy holiday selfies.
The most popular place to stay on Mykonos is beautiful, bustling Mykonos Town, which effortlessly combines the charm of the old with the excitement of the new. Another popular resort is neighbouring Ornos, which is a family favourite thanks to its sheltered beach. Or try Plati Yialos for a classy and cosmopolitan vibe.
In Kefalonia, the northern town of Fiskardo is known as the St Tropez of Greece. Fiskardo’s cosmopolitan harbour bustles with upmarket eateries and the yachts that line the pretty quayside belong to the super-rich. Also in the north is the attractive and historic capital of Argostoli which is worth a visit too.
Classy Nightlife
Once the sun goes down, Greece has some real night-time treats that can rival those anywhere in Europe or beyond.
In Mykonos, the nightlife is sophisticated and prices can reflect this. You’ll have your choice of bars and restaurants in all resorts but the heart of the action is in Mykonos Town. Caprice, with its views of the Little Venice area, is a must-stop destination for a sunset cocktail. Astra Bar is another great one, and don’t miss the buzzing beach clubs like Paradise Club.
Full of designer boutiques, a fabulous nightlife scene, pretty cafes and tavernas, Skiathos Town attracts plenty of holidaymakers - including the rich and famous! Gourmet restaurants and bars can also be found in the two picturesque harbours (one of which is where Mamma Mia was filmed).
In Athens, head to the city centre for stylish modern tavernas. The city comes alive at night with a fantastic bar scene. Iconic Brettos bar, with its rows of backlit bottles, has been serving homemade liqueurs since 1909.
